    Why Study Maritime Cyber Risk Management?

    The course aims to provide a theoretical foundation to understand the cyber risks associated with maritime IT systems and the negative consequences for operations. It also examines and explains the nature of the threats being faced, and explore how they can be understood and mitigated. 

    Learning goals: 

    • Understand the basic concepts of cybersecurity. 
    • Identify key cyber risks and their impact on maritime operations. 
    • Understand the components of a risk management strategy.

    Teaching format

    Designed for flexibility, this course include videos, written materials and interactive activities—so you can learn at your own pace, wherever you are. No formal admission requirements.

    The estimated workload is 15 hours. You will have access to the course in the Canvas learning platform until and including 15 December 2026.

    Course structure - 4 modules

    The course consists of 4 modules:

    1. Introduction to Cybersecurity:
      This module introduces the fundamental concepts of cybersecurity, explaining what steps are undertaken in common attacks. By understanding these key fundamentals, we are better equipped to defend our systems and vessels. 

    2. Safe Seafarers:
      This module focuses on how seafarers' actions and behaviours directly influence vessels' cybersecurity posture, and the different impact of cyber attacks against Operational Technology compared to Information Technology. It delves into understanding social engineering tactics and emphasises the importance of adopting sound cyber hygiene practices to mitigate risks. 

    3. System and Data Security:
      This module examines the various defensive tools and technologies that protect systems and data. It explains how measures such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, encryption, and others contribute to a robust defence against cyber threats.

    4. Cyber Risk Management:
      This module covers the strategic application of security tools and frameworks to build organisational resilience against cyber risks. It explores the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and relevant maritime cybersecurity guidelines.
       

    Target Audience

    The course is open to anyone with a Norwegian BankID who works in the maritime sector, whether you work ashore or on board a vessel or offshore installation.
