PHD914 Embodied Bildung (formation)
Course description for academic year 2026/2027
Contents and structure
The course is an optional part of the PhD programme Studies of Bildung and Pedagogical Practices and is aimed at students wanting to deepen their knowledge about how perspectives on embodied bildung relate to the understanding of didactic practices.
Both the history of ideas, phenomenological and sociocultural aspects on bodily Bildung will be discussed and problematized. Human life and formation through the body is emphasized in understanding how life processes function as formative and forming in humans embodied life.
A central dimension of the course is to think critically about how the body, movements and diet are understood, operationalized and experienced in different didactic practices and traditions. The students are trained to think about the relationship between traditions and their own issues in their own research.
The course also addresses the implications of the different perspectives on the body for research on education and didactics in disciplines such as public health, outdoor life, education and exercise. The course facilitates that participants from different disciplines can explore concepts, practices and scientific traditions and draw this into a debate about bodily formation. The course will help participants develop an independent and critical perspective on didactic practices where body, movement or diet are central.

After completing the course, the student will have the following learning outcome:
Knowledge
The student
- shall have deep-rooted knowledge of how perspectives on bodily building can be included in research and development work
- shall be at the forefront of knowledge within perspectives on bodily bildung relevant in research within public health, outdoor life, food/nutrition education or movement/exercise.
Skills
The student
- shall be able to formulate research questions, plan for and carry out research within the topic of the course.
- shall be able to analyze research material that deals with the content of the course.
General competence
The student
