Seed Funding

Here you will find information about funding you can apply for as a student to engage in research at HVL.

Purpose 

The StudentFORSK funding is intended to stimulate increased student involvement in research and to contribute to the development of research competence among students early in their educational pathway. 

The funding provides financial support for involvement in, and execution of, a research project under academic supervision, anchored at HVL. 

The scheme recognises students with strong academic motivation to carry out a well-planned project with clear potential and value for the field. 

Who can apply? 

  • Bachelor's and master's students in collaboration with a supervisor (academic staff, including PhD candidates). Students writing in a group on the same project may submit one joint application. 

What can you apply for funding for? 

  • Operating funds for project work and execution 
  • Knowledge exchange / academic dissemination, for example participation at conferences 

How much can be applied for? 

  • The maximum amount per application is set at NOK 20,000. 

Content of the application 

A complete application must: 

  • Follow the prescribed template 
  • Have a total length of no more than 3 pages (the reference list does not count toward the page limit and may be included in addition) 
  • Be submitted as a PDF through the application form

Part 1: The project plan must include (1.5–2 pages): 

  • Background for the project (e.g., relevance, previous research, the current state of knowledge) 
  • Research problem and/or research questions 
  • Method and implementation plan, including a description of data collection, analysis, and any ethical considerations 
  • The student's role and contribution in the project 
  • Plan for dissemination of project results, for example through seminars, conference contributions, posters, publications, or thesis work 
  • Budget, specifying and justifying the project's financial needs 

Part 2: The applicant's motivation and research potential (max 1 page) 

  • The student's role and learning outcomes 
  • Supervision and academic support 

Assessment criteria 

Applications are assessed according to three main criteria: 

1) Academic excellence 

  • A clear and relevant research problem 
  • Scientific rationale 
  • Methodological quality and feasibility 

2) Research potential 

The assessment is based on: 

  • The originality of the project and its potential for new knowledge or innovation 
  • The student's motivation and potential 
  • Planned and realistic dissemination activities (presentations, posters, articles, bachelor's/master's thesis) 
  • Plan for academic follow-up and support 

3) Budget 

  • A budget that justifies the need for StudentFORSK funding 

Assessment process and timeline 

Applications are assessed by a committee consisting of representatives from StudentFORSK. Further information about the timeline and allocation will be published in connection with the call. 

An award will additionally entail: 

  • Nomination for the HVL StudentFORSK Research Award 
  • Recognition in the form of a diploma 
  • An invitation to present the project/results at the annual StudentFORSK conference
